HDB aircon installation: rules, costs and what fits your flat
HDB flats have specific rules about where a condenser can go and how the pipework must be run. Getting this right at installation avoids a costly re-do and keeps you compliant.
What HDB requires
We handle the standard requirements as part of the installation and flag anything unusual before the job is booked.
- The condenser must sit on the designated aircon ledge or within the service yard
- No drilling or mounting on external building facades
- Condensate must discharge to an approved point, never onto the unit below
- Installation must be carried out by a competent installer
- Any work involving hacking of structural elements needs prior approval

Condenser ledge: the detail most people miss
Older flats have smaller ledges that may not physically fit a System 4 outdoor unit alongside existing equipment. Check the ledge dimensions before committing to a system size.
Bracket condition matters too — corroded brackets on an ageing ledge must be replaced, and that should appear in the quote rather than as a surprise on the day.
Timing your installation during renovation
The ideal window is after ceiling and carpentry works are framed but before the final painting, so pipe runs can be concealed cleanly. Install too early and the units get covered in renovation dust; too late and you are surface-mounting trunking across a finished wall.
