Aircon gas top-up in Singapore: when you need it and when you're being oversold
Gas top-up is the most oversold service in the Singapore aircon trade. Refrigerant is a sealed, closed loop — it is not consumed like fuel. If your system is low, it has a leak, and topping it up without finding that leak means you will be paying again within months.
What refrigerant actually does
Refrigerant cycles between liquid and gas, absorbing heat indoors and releasing it outdoors. The charge is fixed at installation and should never drop across the life of the system.
Most units in Singapore use R32 or R410A. They are not interchangeable, and mixing them damages the compressor.
Real signs of low refrigerant
Note that all of these can also be caused by a dirty coil. That is why a proper diagnosis checks airflow and cleanliness before touching the gas.
- Cooling has weakened gradually over weeks, not suddenly
- Ice forming on the thin copper pipe at the outdoor unit
- A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor unit
- The system runs constantly and never reaches the set temperature
- Higher electricity bills with no change in usage
Why a leak test is non-negotiable
A correct job pressure-tests the system with nitrogen, locates the leak point, repairs it, pulls a vacuum to remove moisture and air, then charges to the manufacturer's specified weight.
Charging by feel instead of by weight is the other common shortcut — an overcharged system runs at high pressure and shortens compressor life just as surely as an undercharged one.
How to spot an unnecessary upsell
- A top-up is recommended without any pressure gauge being connected
- Nobody mentions where the leak is or offers to find it
- You were told a system 'naturally loses gas every year' — it does not
- Filters and coil were visibly dirty but cleaning was never suggested first
- No price is given before the work starts
